story of our cafe

The idea.

from the heart

Following the success of his Fin & Feathers restaurants which catered to a social crowd Damon Johnson Sr. decided to open a more relaxed family cafe’ Augie’s. Named in memory of his father father Augie Johnson.

Augie Johnson This great artist was best known for his leadership of the group Side Effect, but was also instrumental in hits of many other artists ranging from Michael Jackson to Boz Scaggs.

start up

After finding the perfect location for his café’ one deserving of the name Augie’s. Damon and his team decided to open 1540 Ralph David Abernathy with the vision of providing dine In and takeout that was reminiscent of the many cafe’s and diners that artists and musicians of the past would frequent when on the road travelling across the country. Serving their favorite dishes, recipes & regional favorites.

Proven concept

Augie’s café caters to the entire audience with everything from your classic hamburger to southern staples like shrimp & grits.

Our menu was designed with everyone in mind even your pickiest eater will find something delicious on our menu and the dish will be prepared with love. So sit down relax and let us cater to your culinary desires.

Today I popped in here for a birthday brunch with the recommendation. Now this was a drive for me but if you live on the Southside this will be more convenient. This restaurant is located right next to Slutty Vegan on Ralph David Abernathy. Parking is street parking only so be mindful. Once inside this restaurant is small and quaint. This is not like a regular brunch lounge but a cafe. It gives you the neighborhood breakfast spot vibe. Music is playing but not loud where you can't enjoy a good conversation. Food wise I ordered the Ready or Not and also the Strawberry Shortcake waffles which was both delicious. The food presentation was amazing. Our waitress was personable with a good attention to detail. This spot is about a month old so liquor is not on the menu as of yet. Overall a great experience and I am excited for this black owned business.
